Oral Placement Therapy (OPT)

OPT addresses the physical movements of speech and feeding.  Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson's OPT and use of Talk Tools Therapy incorporates proprioceptive and kinesthetic feedback necessary to address the sensory aspects of speech production and feeding.  For many children with a motor basis to their speech or feeding difficulty (e.g. children with Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism Spectrum Disorders, motor disorders), auditory and visual information is not sufficient to teach the muscles how to move for speech and feeding.  Talk Tools Therapy and Sara's OPT improve the mobility, agility, strength and endurance of muscles of the jaw, tongue, lips and palate to improve speech clarity and feeding.

OPT is always conducted in conjunction with speech, language and feeding interventions.  OPT ensures the foundation skills are in place to achieve identified speech sound production, feeding and oral management goals.

OPT will help if your child has difficulty with the following actions:

  • Blowing out candles
  • Drinking from a straw
  • Keeping their mouth closed during speech and play
  • Drooling
  • Limited repertoire of vowels and consonants (speech sounds)
  • Difficulty understanding your child (clarity)
  • Limited food repertoire (textures, taste, smells)
  • Fixed jaw position (wide-stretched smile)
